Too busy for that

Too busy for that

Do you catch yourself saying any of the following often? I'm just too busy to read that. Too busy to do that. Too busy to help there. Too busy to go there. I've just been too busy to do that. My summer is too busy. My life is too busy. It's just that I am crazy busy.
I understand, because I struggle with the same thing. I'm going to be quoting a book a lot in this post, and honestly just suggest that you go read it. It was given to me while in college because I felt the same way in college too. Juggling so much at one time that I barely had time for what was most important in my life. The book is called Crazy Busy by Kevin Deyoung.
In this book he says,
“Busyness does not mean you are a faithful or fruitful Christian. It only means you are busy, just like everyone else. And like everyone else, your joy, your heart and your soul are in danger.”
Having things to do is ok, and even good! However, we need to make time for our relationship with Jesus first and foremost, then our family, and our church.  Deyoung says, “We wake up most days not trying to serve, just trying to survive," and this is so true. How many days do you feel like there is just so much to do, and you are just trying to make it through the day? I know I feel like this often!  I'll quote Deyoung one more time, and we need to get this. He says, "Busyness kills more Christians than bullets." How is being busy helping your family spiritually? How is being busy helping YOU spiritually? Or maybe the better question is, How is being busy hurting you spiritually?
When being busy comes between us and our relationship with God, it is wrong. Jackie Hill Perry said in an interview that a question she asks herself when discerning when to say yes or no to things is "What is the most profitable thing for my soul, for my family, for my local community?" I wonder what we would change about our schedules when we realize how our busyness is affecting us. Would you take more time to rejoice and praise? Would you serve more? Would you rest more because you were serving too much that it was affecting your walk with God? Would you take more time to worship with your family? Would you slow your kids schedules that they would have time to read their Bible's? What is the most profitable thing (in the scope of eternity) for your soul, your family, your church? We need to learn when to say yes, and when to say no, based upon what is most profitable to our walk with God, and what is best for our children's walk as well.
This is not me pointing a finger at you, because I am equally guilty. I feel busy all the time, and at times know that I could be doing a better job in certain areas of leadership (whether at home, or at church), or even in my personal life. I write this as a challenge to us all, that our own walks, our own families, and our own church can grow stronger together.
